What to Do with Soggy Drywall After a Flood

No one wants to have to deal with a flood, but when it happens you need to know what to do. If you have drywall that the flood has left soggy, then you need to know how to perform water damage restoration work. It is something that you should think about before the event and have a plan in place for when it does happen.

Mold

This can be a big issue, and you will want to make sure that your drywall does not become affected. This will mean dealing with the drying out as soon as possible. If you can beat the mold, you will be saving yourself extra work. If you can deal with this within 48 hours, you should come out on top.

Drying out drywall

Unfortunately, damaged drywall cannot be used and will need to be removed as soon as possible. You will know if it is beyond saving as it will be flexible and going soft. If there was not too much water damage, the upper part may be saved. Even if there are only a few inches of water, it is likely that there will be around 4 feet of drywall that will be lost. Once removed, the area behind can begin to dry.

Removing water-soaked drywall

Water damage restoration can be smooth if you take the right steps. Firstly, select the area to be removed. Mark it and then cut along the markings using a utility knife. Cut up to three-quarters of the way through the drywall, and then begin to move it gently until it becomes loose.

Next, a hammer can be used to remove the drywall from the studs that are holding it in place. Gently pull the drywall and it will come away. The insulation is likely to be damp, so that will need to be removed as well. It will not be expensive to replace, and you will be sure that no damp is left behind that may damage the next section of drywall used.

Final Drying

The final stage is to make sure the moisture has gone, and this will be done by placing fans in the area. It may take up to 72 hours before you are happy with the results. By now the water damage restoration will be complete.

Equipment and safety

Even if this is in your own home, you should wear protective equipment. This will mean glasses, gloves, hard hats, and shoes. Any electrical circuits in the location should be turned off too, to avoid electric hazards.

Call a professional water damage restoration business, like Puroclean Certified Restoration Specialists, for assistance completing any of these tasks.
